When the Ohio Innocence Project reached out to WTOL about one of the most notorious murders in recent Toledo history, there was skepticism. However, through a six-month investigation, the station uncovered serious flaws in the murder investigation and even deeper concerns about the handling of criminal defense for poor residents in the area. Guilty Without Proof reported that local counties provided substandard levels of representation and legal assistance to poor defendants. The WTOL news team continued to report on the ongoing Ohio Innocence Project investigation to showcase flaws in the local criminal justice system. Due to WTOL’s reporting, local counties are addressing these issues to better serve poor and under-served defendants in the Toledo area.
In March, The Innocence Project honored WTOL with the Innocence Network Journalism Award.
