Service to Community Award for Radio – Large Market
It has been said that there was never a more crucial election year than 2020. That sentiment was even more apparent in Georgia after Atlanta made national news regarding voter suppression during the primary election. When the team at WALR heard about this issue, the program director encouraged the Black radio program directors to come together to discuss how they could create positive change and educate their listeners on how, where and when to vote in the November general election. The group established Black Radio United for The Vote, which brought together 16 radio stations and the Urban League of Greater Atlanta to register Black voters across metro Atlanta and get them to the polls. With the help of the 16 radio stations, Georgia set a record number of votes casts with over 4 million votes.
